The Trolley Problem

A runaway trolley is approaching a turnout. Five people stand on the main track, while one person stands on the alternate branch.

• If the switch remains on Main, the trolley continues toward five people.
• If the switch is Diverted, the trolley turns toward one person.

Alice argues for pulling the switch to save five lives. Robert argues that deliberately redirecting lethal harm creates a distinct moral responsibility.

The Switchyard

The raised tabletop scene is deliberately abstract: a toy-like trolley, a chunky switch lever, a gentle turnout, and six mannequin figures. The lever can be clicked directly. In the development Workbench, its state can also be set to Main or Diverted, and the trolley animation can be replayed.

Witnesses and Principles

Witnesses introduce concrete facts about the trolley, track, lever, and people involved. Principles introduce broader moral arguments about outcomes, rights, intention, action, and responsibility.
